in order to get John Edwards, whom i like much better than Kerry. Edwards seems honest and hardworking, Kerry, i dunno...

what PETA found at KFC Jul. 23rd, 2004 @ 08:51 pm
An undercover investigation by PETA finds some horrific conditions at a KFC supplier (workers "jumping up and down on live chickens, drop-kicking them like footballs and slamming them into walls, apparently for fun.")

anybody who`s interested in having photographic prints made from slides better do it NOW. ilford and kodak have stopped making their type-r papers and as soon as labs run out of it all there will be none left. they are forcing us to go digital, those bastards.
» What we don't need is the status quo
well it looks like it's going to be Bustamante and Schwartzenegger. Bustamante is against the recall, yet he is running. hmm.

i'm against Bustamante because i feel like he represents the status quo. what California needs is an outsider, not more of the same. if it comes down to it, i'll vote for Arnold just to keep Bustamante out. i don't actually think Arnold would make a bad governor, i think he's smarter than a lot of people give him credit for.

some people probably feel like the plethora of candidates makes California the laughing stock of the country. i disagree-there is something very democratic about anyone from a car salesman to a porn star being able to run for governor.

» Tristan's list of top 10 favorite films of all time
(all are absolute must-sees/must-owns, in no particular order):

The Last Picture Show
"I guess if it wasn't for Sam, I'd have missed it, whatever it is. I'd have been one of them amity types that thinks that playin' bridge is about the best thing that life has to offer. "

Stranger Than Paradise
"I'm choking the alligator."

The Night of the Hunter
"I can hear you whisperin' children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience children. I'm coming to find you now."

Blue Velvet
"See that clock on the wall? In five minutes you are not going to believe what I just told you."

Rear Window
"We've become a race of Peeping Toms. What people ought to do is get outside their own house and look in for a change. Yes sir. How's that for a bit of homespun philosophy?"

Taxi Driver
"Listen, you fuckers, you screwheads. Here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the cunts, the dogs, the filth, the shit. Here is a man who stood up."

Double Indemnity
"Suddenly it came over me that everything would go wrong. It sounds crazy, Keyes, but it's true, so help me. I couldn't hear my own footsteps. It was the walk of a dead man. "

Bagdad Café (aka Out of Rosenheim)
"Don't tell me that was it, Arnie! I mean, you gotta be kidding! That what I had you come up here for? I don't believe it! I mean she, she shows up outta nowhere without a car, without a map. She ain't got nothing but a suitcase filled with men's clothing. How come? How come she act so funny like she was gonna stay here forever? And with no clothes?! No! I don't like it! It don't make no sense at all! No, no, no, no, no! It don't make no sense!"

River's Edge
"This is like some fuckin' movie! Friends since second grade, fuckin' like THIS [crosses fingers ] and then one of us gets himself in potentially BIG trouble, and now we've gotta deal with it; we've got to test our loyalty against ALL odds! It's kind of... exciting. I feel like... Chuck Norris, y'know? "

Wizard of OZ
"Professor Marvel never guesses. He knows! "
» I was fully prepared to pay, but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to!
today i brought my glasses into a Lenscrafters store to have the nosepads replaced (one of them fell off) and also have the frames adjusted. i was fully prepared to pay for this since i did not buy the glasses there but was pleasantly surprised that i did not have to pay anything.

i even offered to pay for it because i don't have this predominate mentality that a lot of Americans seem to have of wanting to get something for nothing.

the very last time i had to have my glasses adjusted, a couple of years ago, i was visiting Vacouver, B.C and just walked into one of those high end optical boutiques and asked them how much she would charge me to adjust my glasses. the lady said no charge for Americans...

» Where to go?
i'm at an interesting time in my life right now in that i can pick up
and go anywhere. but, i'm having trouble figuring out where to live. i
was recently layed off from a tech job and am currently looking for
work and doing freelance/temp. work and also started my own photography
side business.

i currently live in the Bay Area but i feel like it's too expensive in
terms of cost of living. and, i grew up here so naturally i don't like
it much. it seems like it's hard to get around too, that damn bay is
always in the way.

i'd like a good balance of a place that has jobs yet a low cost of
living and high quality of life. and, i'm 32, a single guy, so the
possiblities for meeting my future wife need to also be good.

cities i've been to that i've liked so far and am considering are;
Vancouver BC, San Diego and San Luis Obispo. the last two i've heard
have terrible job markets and I probably wouldn't want to go to
Vancouver without first landing a job there, and Vancouver isn't that
cheap a place to live.

i feel like i'd go anywhere if i knew the chance to have a good and
happy life was there. but i've had this discussion with my mom and she
says happiness comes from within and so i should just make myself be
happy here. i think that's just her way of saying that she doesn't want
me to move far away from 'home'...
» Conan O'Brien is cool
while watching Conan O'Brien as the guest on Charlie Rose the other day, i learned of his 2000 Harvard Commencement speech, which is great. well worth the read!

» Arhnold for Governor?!
i actually think Arnold would make a fine governer. he would have the added
pressure of increased media scrutinization/attention (which would make
him want to do the right thing that much more). he can't be any worse
than davis. the fact that he is running brings visability to the recall
and will in turn get more young people to vote.

Arnold is a moderate Republican and a fiscal conservative, i think a
winning combination and just what the doctor ordered for California
right now. although i am a bit frustrated that he has not yet come out and addressed any issues yet.

that said, imho, he's not as sexy as Ariana...
» I love my film cameras
I love my film cameras. But I have to admit digital is nice because I can eliminate the lab. Dealing with and waiting for labs has always been frustrating. I can edit a digital camera image in Photoshop to get it just how I like it and then take that (or even upload it) to a lab to have it printed photographically with great results.

On the other hand, if it's a given that one has to tweak the images that come out of a digital camera (ie. be your own lab) in order to get great results (and I believe that it is), then there is something to
be said for the argument that one should shoot film, have it processed, scan the negatives in with a high quality scanner, and tweak those files. This provides one the archival negatives (something that is
missing with digital) as well as a higher quality image to crop down if need be. All while retaining the characteristics of your favorite film.

In order for me to match the quality of my small 35mm film camera (Leica), I would have to get a high end digital SLR, which would be much bigger and a pain to carry around. If I want a small digital camera, the current choice would be a 4-5 megapixel camera which is not 35mm film quality.

So I hope I'll be shooting film for a long long time. As an esthetic choice, in film I like the subtle certain glassy-like something that digital images seem to be lacking. the grain, the almost subliminal natural 'analogness' of film. Yes, digital is (in most situations) more convenient and quicker, but I don't know that I want to define my photographic artistry through manners of convenience but rather through the creative conscious choices i make throughout.

The more digital imaging starts to take over, the more "classic" film will feel-somehow classic in much the in same way my Leica feels classic.

"...think of grainy black-and-white film, or jittery Super 8, or scratches on vinyl. These limitations tell you something about the context of the work, where it sits in time, and by invoking that world they deepen the resonances of the work itself. "
